Learn how to groom dogs with confidence, skill, and care, without fear, force, rushing, or pushing dogs past their limits.
The Calm Dog First Professional Grooming Course is a hybrid training experience for beginners, groomers, dog owners, and animal professionals who believe beautiful results should never come at the cost of a dog’s emotional safety.
Complete the online modules, then bring it all together in a hands-on practical training session with Amanda in East Brisbane.

Next Intake: Saturday 29th August 2026 - East Brisbane
Too many grooming environments have normalised rushing.
Full schedules. Tight time slots. Pressure to get dogs finished quickly. Groomers being pushed to move faster, even when the dog in front of them is overwhelmed, frightened, freezing, or trying to communicate that they need a pause.
That is not calm.
That is not kind.
And it is not the only way to groom.
The Calm Dog First approach teaches you how to slow down enough to read the dog, respond with skill, and complete the groom without forcing them through fear.
Because a dog’s emotional safety matters as much as the final haircut.
A beautiful groom means nothing if the dog leaves traumatised.
“When dogs feel safe, everything about the groom improves.”
The Calm Dog First Professional Grooming Course teaches you how to groom dogs professionally while protecting their emotional safety throughout the process.
You’ll learn how to bathe, dry, brush, clip, trim, handle, pause, assess, and communicate in a way that supports the dog in front of you - not just the schedule.
This is about building real grooming skill without hardening yourself, overriding the dog, or betraying your own values.
Groom with more confidence and less second-guessing.
Recognise early signs of stress before they escalate.
Use calm handling to support cooperation and trust.
Choose the right tools and techniques for different coats.
Complete core grooming tasks safely and thoughtfully.
Know when to pause, slow down, or stop for the dog’s welfare.
Feel proud of the way you work.
You are not just learning how to groom.
You are learning how to become the kind of person dogs can trust on the grooming table.
This course is for people who want to groom well, without causing fear or overwhelm along the way.
Learn professional grooming foundations the calm, dog-first way from the start.
Reconnect with your ethics and learn how to work with dogs, not against them.
Build confidence keeping your own dog clean, tidy, and comfortable at home.
Add calm grooming and handling awareness to the work you already do.
It is for beginners who want to learn strong, ethical foundations from the start.
It is for existing groomers who feel burnt out, conflicted, or frustrated by rushed salon environments where speed is prioritised over the dog’s welfare.
It is for dog owners who want to confidently keep their own dogs clean, tidy, and comfortable at home without turning grooming into a battle.
It is for vet nurses, rescue workers, animal carers, and dog professionals who want to better understand calm handling, grooming, body language, and emotional safety.
And it is for anyone who has ever watched a dog freeze, panic, shut down, or struggle through grooming and thought:
“There has to be a better way.”
This course is for the person who puts the dog first - always.
This course gives you practical grooming foundations through a calm, dog-first lens.
You will learn the technical skills needed to groom dogs professionally, while also learning how to read the dog in front of you, respond to their stress signals, and make safe, thoughtful decisions throughout the groom.
Inside the course, you’ll learn:
Understand the Calm First philosophy, why the dog’s nervous system matters, and how to introduce grooming tools in a slow, safe, confidence-building way.
Learn how to prepare the coat before bathing, choose appropriate shampoos and conditioners, bathe safely, dry calmly, and reduce stress during one of the most sensory-intense parts of grooming.
Learn how to keep tools and grooming spaces clean, prevent cross-contamination, identify common coat types, choose suitable brushes, and spot skin issues, lumps, parasites, irritation, or other red flags.
Learn how to read subtle body language, recognise early stress signals, use the Consent Loop, apply the Power Pause, and understand when a dog needs you to slow down, adjust, or stop.
Learn core care tasks including nail trimming and filing, ear hygiene, sanitary trims, paw pad care, and gentle dental hygiene foundations.
Learn foundational scissor and clipper skills, blade safety, grooming service types, tool control, coat finishing, and how to manage matting using the Comfort over Vanity rule.
Learn occupational health and safety, bite prevention, ergonomics, emergency response, welfare-based stops, client communication, record keeping, and how to build trust through a dog-first approach.
The Calm Dog First Professional Grooming Course is a hybrid learning experience.
You’ll complete the course modules online first, then attend a hands-on practical training session with Amanda to bring everything together with real dogs.
Work through the online course modules first, covering the Calm First philosophy, grooming theory, coat care, handling principles, safety, hygiene, professional techniques, and dog-first decision making.
You can take your time, revisit the material, and arrive at the hands-on session knowing what you’re there to practise.
During the practical training session, Amanda demonstrates the Calm Dog First approach in real time, showing how she handles the dog, introduces tools, reads body language, adjusts her pace, uses pauses, and makes decisions based on the dog in front of her.
After observing Amanda, each student has the opportunity to practise with a dog under her guidance, bringing the online learning into your hands, timing, body language, and confidence.
You’ll be supported to apply the techniques calmly and thoughtfully, with the dog’s welfare kept at the centre throughout.
Students who complete the course receive a Certificate of Completion recognising their training in calm, dog-first grooming techniques across both the online learning and hands-on practical component.

Please note: Students will need to bring a suitable dog for the hands-on practical session. Dogs are not provided, and suitability details will be confirmed through the enrolment form.
This is not about rushing to perform perfectly.
It is about learning how to stay calm, observe clearly, handle safely, and respond to the dog in front of you.
Dogs are never forced or pushed through the session. Participation is adapted to suit each dog’s comfort, confidence, age, behaviour, and needs.
This is a learning environment, not a performance space.
The goal is to help you build practical confidence while keeping the dog’s welfare at the centre.

You do not need to arrive feeling confident.
You need to arrive willing to learn, observe, slow down, and put the dog first.

Amanda has spent over 16 years working hands-on in the grooming industry.
She began her grooming career through work experience in 2010 and 2011, where she was offered paid employment as a bath and dryer and gained her first real experience inside a salon environment.
From there, Amanda worked steadily through every stage of grooming, building practical skill, confidence, and a deep understanding of dogs in real-world settings.
Within two years, she was working as an experienced groomer. Today, she is recognised as a senior groomer and salon manager with more than 16 years in the industry.
But what makes Amanda’s approach different is not just how long she has been grooming.
It is how she grooms.
Amanda works with each dog as an individual. She adjusts her handling and approach to suit puppies, seniors, anxious dogs, and dogs with medical or behavioural challenges.
Her priority is always to work within the dog’s needs, rather than pushing them beyond what feels safe.
This course reflects the way Amanda has always worked: calm, thoughtful, respectful grooming that allows dogs to feel secure, understood, and cared for - while still achieving a professional result.
“Every dog deserves to feel safe while being groomed.”
— Amanda
16+ years in the grooming industry
Senior groomer and salon manager
Experienced with sensitive dogs
Creator of the Calm 'Dog First' approach
Amanda has hands-on experience with puppies, seniors, anxious dogs, and dogs with medical or behavioural needs.
This course teaches professional grooming skill without asking you to ignore the dog’s emotional safety.
Getting the groom finished
Speed and efficiency first
Technique without enough behaviour awareness
Pushing through resistance
The final look above the dog’s experience
Professional grooming skill with emotional safety
How to read subtle stress signals
When to pause, slow down, or stop
How to adapt to the dog in front of you
Beautiful results without fear, force, or rushing
This is not a rushed, technique-only grooming course.
And it is not just a “be gentle with dogs” course either.
The Calm Dog First Professional Grooming Course brings both together: real grooming skill and deep respect for the dog’s emotional safety.
You will learn how to groom properly, but you will also learn how to notice the dog in front of you.
Their body language.
Their stress signals.
Their comfort level.
Their tolerance.
Their trust.
Most grooming training focuses on getting the groom finished.
This course teaches you how to complete the groom without ignoring what the dog is telling you along the way.
You’ll learn how to pause before stress escalates, how to adapt your handling, how to make welfare-based decisions, and how to work with the dog rather than against them.
Because a groom is not truly successful if the dog leaves scared, shut down, or traumatised.
A beautiful result matters.
But the way the dog feels during and after the groom matters too.
